Every six months Shirley's Shoes run
an ART COMPETITION, which is open to everyone of all
ages. The winners of that art competition are featured
on each page of our mail/ phone order catalogue. The
intention of the art competition is to add an extra
element of colour, excitement and interest to our catalogue.
The winners of this art competition will now be featured
on this web-site in a slide show. We have featured the
winning artwork from each of our past spring-summer
and autumn-winter catalogues.

Through our art competition we give away $5000 in prizes each year. The prize for each page winner is a $100 gift voucher from Shirleys Shoes. The two cover prize winners each receive $500 in cash. The winning artworks are photographed and returned to the artists.

we keep the rules very simple.

catalogue. Please note that colour photocopies of the
original artwork will not be judged.
Who can enter?
The art competition is open to all ages.
We
will be increasing the total prize pool for the
next art competition to $5000
2 cover prizes of $500 each
Shirleys Shoes cover
- $500
Nextshoes cover - $500
We have also decided to introduce different categories
in which you can enter to increase your chances of being
successful. To give new artists, or those who haven’t
won a prize in our competition, a chance we will be
introducing a NOVICE category.
Also the children’s categories of the art competition
will now be open to all ages.
NEVER WON A PRIZE?
HERES YOUR CHANCE! If you haven’t entered
before, NOWS THE TIME!

ART JUDGES REPORT
February
2006
It is getting harder and harder to select so few from so many entries. We had approximately 270 from all over the North Island. Well done all of you! The man-hours spent on the works must run into thousands of hours and the results were stunning. Again some of the problems we encountered had to do with appropriateness of the entries (Autumn and Winter) and suitability of reproduction. It is important to remember the works need to be photographed!!
It may seem to you that some winners may not be as good as you expected but remember I try to even out the different categories and age groups, split between previous prize winners and those that have never won a prize. The prizes were further split between Students, Novice, Hobby, Accomplished and Semi or Professional Artists. If that wasn’t done the same winners would win the same prizes all the time and there would be no incentive for newcomers to enter. The fact there are so many more new entrants is very encouraging.
The variety of the pieces submitted, in use of media, techniques and use of colour never ceases to amaze me. Keep the good work up, you never know when you may win a prize. However, the most important things of all are the facts that you have participated and that your entry is really valued!
The next competition is in August so start working now on your Spring/Summer catalogue entries. Good luck and enjoy getting started.
